About Zao Shen

Zao Shen (灶神), the Kitchen God, lives in every home — observing the family's conduct throughout the year from above the stove.

On the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, he ascends to heaven to report the family's behavior to the Jade Emperor. Families offer sticky foods to sweeten his words.

Famous Folk Tales

3 legendary stories passed down through generations

1

The Kite Escape

On the 23rd day of the 12th month, Zao Shen rides a kite or cloud to heaven. In some villages, children fly kites on this day to help the Kitchen God ascend. One year, a poor family had no kite. The grandmother cooked extra-sticky rice cakes and placed them on the altar, saying: 'Kitchen God, if you must ride something, ride the steam of our offering.' That night, the family dreamed of Zao Shen ascending on a golden cloud that smelled of rice. The family prospered the following year — proving that sincerity of heart matters more than ceremonial perfection.

2

The Honey Trap

A miserly merchant who cheated his customers all year realized on the 23rd that Zao Shen would report his misdeeds. In desperation, he bought the most expensive honey and painted the Kitchen God's image with it — literally sealing his mouth shut. But the honey dripped into the stove fire, creating a fragrant smoke that carried all the way to heaven. The Jade Emperor smelled the sweetness and asked what it was. The honey had not sealed Zao Shen's mouth at all — it had sweetened his entire report. The merchant, realizing his trick had worked accidentally, repented and became an honest businessman.

3

Zhang Lang's Redemption

Zhang Lang was a prosperous merchant who abandoned his faithful wife for a younger woman. He squandered his entire fortune and eventually went blind. Reduced to begging, he wandered from village to village. One bitterly cold day, a kind woman gave him warm food — it was his abandoned wife, who had rebuilt her life through her own hard work. Overcome with unbearable shame, Zhang Lang crawled into the hearth fire. The Jade Emperor, seeing the sincerity of his repentance, appointed him as the Kitchen God — the ultimate guardian of every family's home and hearth.
