Born Already Old
According to ancient myth, Shou Shen's mother carried him in her womb for ten full years. When he finally emerged into the world, he was already an old man with a flowing white beard, a bald head, and a walking staff in hand. Instead of crying like a newborn, he looked at the sky and laughed — a laugh so joyful that it caused peach trees for miles around to burst into bloom. This is why the peach became his eternal symbol.
The Peach Garden of Immortality
In the mythical Kunlun Mountains grows the Peach Garden of the Queen Mother of the West. The tree blossoms only once every 3,000 years, and the fruits require another 3,000 years to ripen. Those who eat a single peach gain 6,000 years of life. In one tale, a mortal woodcutter wandered into the garden and picked a fallen peach. He returned home to find 500 years had passed — his village had become a city, and everyone he knew was gone. But he himself had not aged a single day.
Shou Shen and the Greedy Emperor
A Qin Dynasty emperor once ordered his alchemists to capture Shou Shen and force him to reveal the secret of immortality. When the imperial soldiers finally cornered the god, he simply laughed and pointed at a tortoise crawling by the riverbank. 'That tortoise lives 1,000 years because it moves slowly and worries about nothing,' Shou Shen said. 'You rush everywhere and worry about everything — even if I gave you the peach, you would stress yourself into an early grave.' The emperor was so offended that he sent his army after the god, but Shou Shen had already dissolved into moonlight.
