Who is Cai Shen?

Cai Shen (财神) is the most widely worshipped deity in Chinese folk religion and Taoism. His name literally means "God of Wealth." Statues of Cai Shen can be found in virtually every Chinese-owned business, from street stalls to corporate headquarters. Each Chinese New Year, millions welcome him into their homes with firecrackers and offerings on the 5th day of the lunar new year.

Origins and Legends

According to Taoist scripture, Cai Shen was originally a mortal named Zhao Gongming who lived during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE). Through self-cultivation and meditation, he achieved immortality. He is depicted riding a black tiger and holding a golden ingot.

The most famous legend tells of a poor scholar who shared his last bowl of rice with a hungry beggar on New Year's Eve — the beggar revealed himself as Cai Shen in disguise, and the scholar's descendants prospered for ten generations.

How to Worship Cai Shen

Cai Shen's birthday is celebrated on the 5th day of Chinese New Year. Proper worship requires:

Pro tip: Many business owners place a Cai Shen statue facing the entrance of their shop. The statue should never face a toilet or kitchen — this is considered disrespectful. Replace offerings before they rot, ideally weekly.

What to Pray For

Cai Shen governs material wealth in all forms — not just money, but career advancement, business growth, investments, and general prosperity. Common prayers include: starting a new business, recovering from financial difficulties, career promotion, and blessing a new home with prosperity.

Multiple Wealth Gods

Chinese folk religion recognizes several "Cai Shen" figures: Bi Gan (the honest minister without a heart, symbolizing fair dealing), Fan Li (the merchant who made and gave away three fortunes), Zhao Gongming (the military wealth god commanding celestial treasuries), and Guan Yu (worshipped by businesspeople for righteous dealings).
