Who is Sun Wukong?

Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is arguably the most famous figure in all of Chinese mythology. Born from a magical stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain, he possesses 72 transformations, can somersault 108,000 li (54,000 km) in a single leap, and wields the legendary Ruyi Jingu Bang — a magical staff that can shrink to the size of a needle or expand to hold up the heavens.

Journey to the West

The 16th-century classic novel Journey to the West chronicles Sun Wukong's evolution from rebellious troublemaker to enlightened protector. After terrorizing Heaven, he was imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha for 500 years. Released to serve as bodyguard to the Tang monk Xuanzang on his pilgrimage to India, Wukong battles demons, outwits gods, and ultimately achieves Buddhahood.

The novel is more than entertainment — it's an allegory for spiritual cultivation. Wukong represents the restless mind that must be disciplined before enlightenment can be achieved.

Powers and Weapons

Cultural impact: Sun Wukong inspired countless adaptations — Dragon Ball's Goku, League of Legends' Wukong, and Marvel's Monkey King. His archetype of the rebellious yet lovable trickster-hero transcends cultures.
