1

The Scholar Who Studied by Moonlight

A poor but brilliant scholar named Zhang could not afford lamp oil. Every night for seven years, he studied by the light of the moon, positioning his desk to catch the shifting beams through the changing seasons. One night as he read by the faintest sliver of a new moon, a golden light descended upon his desk. Lu Shen himself stood before him. 'Your dedication has touched heaven,' the god said, and touched Zhang's forehead. Instantaneously, all seven years of study crystallized into perfect understanding. Zhang passed the imperial examination with the highest honors and established free schools across the empire.

2

The Exam Dream

A student named Wang was preparing for the provincial exam but could not stop dreaming about a beautiful woman. Distracted and guilty, he prayed to Lu Shen for help. That night he dreamed of the woman again — but this time she was an old woman with a kind face. 'I was testing your focus,' she said. 'Career and pleasure must not mix before their proper time.' She handed him a writing brush and vanished. Wang woke with unprecedented clarity of mind, passed the exam, and years later met and married a woman who looked exactly like the old woman's younger self.

The Dog That Passed the Exam

According to a humorous folk tale, a magistrate once prayed to Lu Shen for his son to pass the civil exam. The son, however, was a lazy fool who spent all day playing with his dog. On exam day, the son slept through the morning and never arrived at the hall. But a stray dog wandered into the examination room, stepped on the inkstone, and left a paw print on the answer sheet. The examiner, astonished by the 'calligraphy,' declared it the work of a transcendental genius and awarded first place to the address where the dog had wandered from. By the time the magistrate arrived to claim the results, the dog had already run away — but the lesson that 'even a dog can succeed if fate wills it' became a popular saying.
