The Melted Silver
A corrupt magistrate amassed enormous wealth through extortion, bribes, and stolen grain. One night, a storm unlike any other struck his county — deafening thunder that shook mountains and lightning that turned night into day. The next morning, the magistrate's treasuries were found open. Every silver ingot had been melted and fused into a single enormous block, on which was inscribed — in perfectly legible script — the names of every person the magistrate had wronged and the amount stolen from each. The magistrate died of shock on the spot. The silver was divided among his victims.
Dian Mu's Silver Mirrors
Lei Shen is accompanied by Dian Mu (电母), the Mother of Lightning, who carries two polished bronze mirrors. Before Lei Shen strikes, Dian Mu flashes her mirrors across the world — illuminating the darkest corners where evil hides. In one tale, a thief who committed crimes only on moonless nights was suddenly revealed by a lightning flash that illuminated his face across three provinces. The next day, every magistrate in those provinces had the thief's portrait on their desk — drawn exactly as Dian Mu had revealed him.
The Thunder That Missed
A filial son was caring for his elderly mother when a bandit attacked their home. The son fought bravely but was about to be killed when a thunderbolt crashed down — and struck the bandit dead. But the lightning also set the house on fire. The son carried his mother out moments before the roof collapsed. Looking at the sky, he said: 'Thank you, Lei Shen, but you nearly burned my mother.' From the clouds came a rumbling voice: 'I never miss, and I never harm the innocent. The fire you see was a separate test — and you passed.'
